5 Antibiotics Straight From Mother Nature

5 NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS MOTHER NATURE PROVIDES FOR US 🌱

You get sick. You head to the doc expected a prescription to take home with you, fill, and pop for the next two weeks. It's pretty habitual. In fact, 69% of children are exposed to antibiotics before the age of TWO! In general, between 20-30% of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, we just want to "be safe" (talk about psychosomatic effects) but have we ever stopped to think that recklessly taking such a hardcore drug may not be that "safe" after all? 

We are conditioned to believe that the situation above is the "only" way, but I happen to believe that food is medicine. Through studying nutritional epidemiology, i've been learning so much about the harms that over-the-counter drugs can to (side-effects, anybody?) and, alternately, how powerful natural medicine can be as a first line of defense. 

The truth is, this beautiful planet has given us plenty of herbs, plants, fruit, vegetables and other gorgeous substances that are naturally occurring healers. They help to prevent & get rid of infection & infection without the awful side effects from prescription medication.

Antibiotics work against the body, destroying bad bacteria while also destroying good bacteria and weakening the immune system. Let's just say it wrecks HAVOC on our gut microbiome, which is the most powerful control center for our overall health and wellbeing (from mood, to weight, to skin, to metabolism, to hormone regulation...you name it). Foods from nature work with the body, helping it to fight infection and heal, while strengthening the immune system at the same time. Natural medicine will gift us with side-benefits, not side-effects!

The coolest thing Is that when the immune system successfully deals with an infection, it becomes stronger and better, and able to confront similar threats in the future because our immune system “develops in combat”. If all we do is dump antibiotics into our bodies at the first sign of infection, we don’t give the immune system a chance to grow strong like it’s designed to. 

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF ANTIBIOTICS?

Don’t get me wrong I think modern medicine is a wonderful privilege and we’re so blessed to have access to it - but for trauma or severe chronic illness. Not for acute circumstances which could be avoided easily with lifestyle and dietary habits. Side effects could include allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, candida overgrowth, gastrointestinal issues/discomfort, destruction of good bacteria, intestinal inflammation, increased risk for diabetes, and gastrointestinal, kidney and blood abnormalities. The changes in gut micro biome leads to increased susceptibility to infections, compromised immune capacity, and deregulated metabolism. While antibiotics have their place in medicine, natural therapies are definitely safer and can actually be more effective. (For real, google the studies being conducted on Oregano oil!)

5 NATURAL AND STRONG ANTIBIOTICS

🌼 TURMERIC

You've heard how important quelling inflammation in the body is (and i've already talked about it at LENGTH in other posts). But, as a recap, inflammation is the root of most dis-ease, particularly neurodegenerative illnesses (yikes!). We can control inflammation through our dietary choices, limiting exposure to toxins and chemicals in our air and products, and by supplementing with nature's anti-inflammatory superherbs. Turmeric is highly anti-inflammatory and ALSO possesses anti-microbial and anti-viral and anti-parasitic properties which makes it a great natural herbal alternative to fight off infections. Add a piece of fresh turmeric to your fresh juices or smoothies, or grate it into salads. 

🍄MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS

Don't get me STARTED on shrooms. These guys are the underdog but they are so incredibly powerful. The more we (as a scientific community) learn, the more I am convinced that mushrooms are the silver bullet for healing. Mushrooms are considered one of the richest sources of natural antibiotics. The top five medicinal mushrooms include: Reishi, Mitake, Agarikon, Coliolus & Shitake.  Cook them or look for raw mushroom powder and make a tea. Avoid straining to reduce loss of nutrients. ✨ GARLIC

Garlic possesses potent antibiotic, antiviral, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial properties and is able to help protect against nasty bacteria that is stirring up trouble in the body. Squash it, chop it or mince it up (this releases the allicin enzyme) and swallow with a drink of choice. You'll also keep the vampires (and probably your date) away...so that's a plus?

It also assists in preventing and treating respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, parasites and staphylococcus. Take oregano oil internally by placing drops in a capsule -- you can even use it in your cooking to add a flavour boost on top of your healing! The KEY here is to find one that’s safe for internal use! Not all oils are created equal so read your labels (and buy doTERRA oils) For sinus infections you can put a few drops of oregano oil in a pot of steaming water and inhale. 🍯RAW MANUKA HONEY

Honey has been used as a medicine throughout history because of its amazing antibiotic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. To experience the most benefit, you should take a dose of about 1-2 tablespoons of Manuka honey a day. You can take it straight or add it to your favourite herbal tea, spread it on sprouted grain toast, or drizzle it over your oatmeal. The vegan in me MUST add: try to ensure that the source you are getting your honey is cruelty-free and protects the bees, which are critical to our entire ecosystem and life on earth!
